This southernmost region of Spain rings with echoes of the Moors, the invaders from North Africa who ruled the region for almost 800 years. The legacy of the Moors is not limited to the magnificent buildings they left, such as the Alhambra in Granada and the Mesquita in Cordoba; the brilliant white villages with narrow, shady streets and the cool inner patios and grilled windows of the houses also stem from centuries of Moorish occupation. The Andalucia tour includes seldom advertised sites such as "La Cueva de la Pileta" where prehistoric paintings can be admired in a cave which is maintained in its most pristine status, and the cave dwellings of Guadix, home of about 3000 modern-day troglodytes. Included in the tour are the cities of Sevilla, with its magnificent Cathedral and the ever-present Giralda Tower, Ronda, in its unique setting perched on a mountain shelf, and Gibraltar with its playful macaques, the only wild primates of Europe.
